Phishing Fraud
Phishing is where criminals attempt to access your confidential information. This is done either by an email request for your personal information or by luring you to a fake website. It is easy for fraudsters to make their messages look real and credible and sometimes hard for investors to tell the difference between fact and fiction.
- Hi-Fi Corp will never request you to update logon details or upgrade services via links or attachment’s in an email.
- Never enter your personal information such as email address, phone number, address on a non-secure website or webpage.
Tips to avoid phishing:
Never access the any site via a link. Rather type the address into a browser address bar.Always check that you are on a secure website (watch out for “https” in the Internet Address bar at the top of your internet browser)Never open attachments on emails claiming to come from your bank or retailer – they could contain spyware that could track your keystrokes and gather your personal information
- Names of Real Companies — Rather than create from scratch a phony company, the fraudster might use a legitimate company’s name and incorporate the look and feel of its website (including the colour scheme and graphics) into the phishy email.
- URLs that “Look Right” — The email might include a convenient link to a seemingly legitimate website where you can enter the information the fraudster wants to steal. But in reality the website will be a quickly cobbled copy-cat — a “spoofed” website that looks for all the world like the real thing. In some cases, the link might lead to select pages of a legitimate website — such as the real company’s actual privacy policy or legal disclaimer.
